The Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Technology, in collaboration with the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Secretariat, is set to commence the In-country Technical Expert Review (TER) of the Maldives’ First Biennial Transparency Report (BTR).
This review marks a significant milestone in the country’s climate transparency journey under the Paris Agreement’s Enhanced Transparency Framework. The BTR—submitted biennially—provides a detailed overview of national greenhouse gas emissions, mitigation strategies, climate impacts and adaptation measures, as well as support received in finance, technology, and capacity-building.
The Maldives submitted its first BTR ahead of the 30st May 2025 deadline, becoming the third Small Island Developing State (SIDS) to do so. In recognition of this achievement, the Maldives was awarded the BTR Champion Certificate, highlighting its dedication to climate accountability and global cooperation.
The upcoming TER will bring together a team of international experts who will review and assess the Maldives’ BTR. Their goal is to evaluate the accuracy and clarity of the report, identify capacity-building needs, provide feedback for improvement, and help strengthen the country’s monitoring and reporting systems. This process will play a crucial role in shaping the Maldives’ next BTR submission, due in 2026, and further reinforce its climate resilience.
Join us in this pivotal event as the Maldives continues to lead by example in climate transparency and global environmental stewardship.
